Sara participated in a series of Gates Foundation-funded Social Science Research Council meetings on improving quality in undergraduate education. Richard Arum and Josipa Roksa (the co-authors of the book, Academically Adrift) headed up the initiative that involved faculty from 6 different disciplines to ask hard questions about what is most important for a major in a discipline to know upon graduating. A book "Improving Quality in American Higher Education: Learning Outcomes and Assessments for the 21st Century" has been published based on the meetings: Jenny Knight and Clarissa Dirks co-wrote the chapter that summarizes the biology discussions that Sara was involved in (click here for a list of the faculty involved).

An Inside Higher Education article summarizes this project.
