Christian wrote an entry for ASU's Teach Tech Blog where he illustrates how active learning is benefiting different students in different ways. Summarizing recent research out of the lab that shows that women underperform on biology exams, underparticipate in whole class discussions, feel less comfortable in whole class discussions, and are less likely to take on the role of leader in small group discussions - he makes the point that perhaps it is our responsibility as instructors to address these inequities in our active learning classrooms.
