This is the fourth annual meeting of the Society for the Advancement in Biology Education Research (SABER) and over 240 people will be attending the meeting in Minneapolis, MN. The Biology Education Research Lab at ASU will be well-represented at SABER 2014; we are authors on four presentations.
1. Sara is presenting a talk on how departments could use the BioCore Guide: "BioCore Guide: A tool to interpret the core concepts of Vision and Change for general biology majors."
2. Christian is presenting a poster on how we can identify misconceptions in student thinking about the core concept of systems in molecular biology, physiology, and ecology: "Examining undergraduates' understanding of systems biology concepts using the BioCore Guide."
3. Collaborators Sarah Eddy and Dan Grunspan will be presenting one of the Hot Topics talks on work they are doing with Sara on gender differences in introductory biology "Gendered experiences: Illuminating Hidden Inequities in Introductory Biology."
4. Collaborator Brian Couch will be presenting a poster based on the BioMaps project and the development of a general biology programmatic assessment: "Development of biology concept assessments for use at the departmental level."
Sara is also facilitating two lunchtime panel discussions focused on professional development in biology education research. Faculty will provide their insights on "Getting your first job in discipline-based education research" and "Getting tenure as a discipline-based education researcher."
